Menander's Theta: A Review

Aristophanes of Byzantium quipped, Oh Menander in Life, which of you imitated the other. Theta was not intended just for the educated elite, as no doubt a mass of illiterate citizens happily flocked towards the stage when plays were put on during festivals and special occasions. Unlike old comedy, one of the most noticeable differences is the absence of any lampooning of current events or public figures. A comedy that publicly bashed the local authorities would result in the responsible comedian's exile at best, and an execution at worst.
