English had already borrowed a few words, like circle in squar. But beyond that, the english vocabulary was very limited when it came to geometry. In advanced geometry there are different kinds of triangles. A triangle with three equal sides is called an equilateral triangle and a triangle with two equal sides is calle an isoceles triangle. Those were technical distinctions using terms that didn't exist in english. So robert record invented his own term for a figure with four equal sides.
