Mendelssohn's Octet
By the time Mendelssohn started his octet, he had already become an accomplished composer. These early works were written in the last years of Beethoven's life. But every piece I've just mentioned was an already existing form. He didn't push music forward, he didn't fight the established ways of writing music. Within all the rules, within those established ways, Mendels sohn just did everything better than just about anyone else who was doing that.
