I was watching a relatively recent talk you gave at Oxford where you talked about a conference at Leeds University that was attended by more than 500 top-notch scholars on Africa. You posed a question to them: How many people here have written at least one paper in an African language? And none of these African scholars raised their hand. Well, thinking about your decision 45 years ago to writing Gekuyo from then onwards, I wanted to jump forward to the status of African languages today in the present moment.
