I took a decision early on not to let her inner landscape, r, her inner life, e, be visible or vocal in the book. What i've done really is to allow the narrator of the book, who is almost a character im, at a critical late moment, to turn round and lean out of the page as it were. And i would hope that's a sort of uncomfortable moment, a sort of pointed moment that draws a little blood. You know, it's not a fair accusation, of course, against all readers, but it's certainlyi's certainly a fair one against quite a fewer, and most definitely against quite a few south african readers.
