The Importance of Faith in Translation
There are many great translators, but the work of translation is an act of faith on the part of the reader. So read Shelley in the original English and you're getting a sense of Dante. Without Russian, why do you read Constance Garnet's translations of Chekhov? I prefer her translator to Rosamund Bartlett. Many thinkConstance Garnet doesn't render the writer what they might sound like into English. You're a conduit between two sources, two divine sources.
