i s b n numbers were conceived by david whittaker in the u k. The idea was, booksellers needed a way to keep track of books once computers came around. Each number consists of five elements, and each section is separated by spaces or hyphens that convey certain amounts of information. And currently its either 9, seven eight, nine seven nine. It's always three digits in length.
