Even in his own lifetime, Jefferson knew that slavery was an abomination and a fundamental hypocrisy. His closest friends were abolitionists. He reflected a sort of complacent attitude of the planter class of his times. But it was by no means representative of all Virginians, all Americans or all members of the Enlightenment scattered around the world.
