I was there in 1993 to 1995. I arrived just at the point of Mao Zedong's 100th anniversary, what would have been his 100th birthday. Changsha, the capital of Hunan was just decked out for Mao. The students were still being taught a socialist curriculum about lei feng and working for the peasants. And furthermore, they had parents who didn't really guide them through this cultural revolution. So it was a very interesting time,. You know, Peter Hasler captured that period rather beautifully.
