The Industrial Revolution: A History and Perspective
The first 100 years of the industrial revolution from around 1750 to 1850 were impressive. But real incomes of working people did not improve, even though they're working hours lengthened and they're working conditionally worse. And we argue a change in technology that really made the better outcomes possible was a move away from just automation and toward more skilled work.
