Is There a Lack of Information Coming From the Motor System?
There's been a debate in the field between people who think that first order models can explain everything. We did an experiment recently using functional MRI to try and tease apart these different accounts. And what we found was, I think, pretty clear cut using fMRI was that this integrated estimate of confidence is tracked in the medial prefrontal cortex. That also explains or offers an explanation for why, if you have brain damage to the frontal lobes, then you see deficits in your confidence about your behaviours.
