MERSC is a tool that builds on top of Docker, basic open source technology. We give MERSC away as an MIT licensed piece of technology. It will never depend on a piece of core technology that's vital to running our business that is not open source. I've been burned many times over whether the proprietaryness comes from the lock-in of the clouds or it comes from sort of consulting wear.
