Emma George is trying to find out, but she thinks that these bacterias have been inside these cryptomonoids for at least 4,000 generations since the first sample was collected. So that suggests there must be some kind of interdependence going on. A 2021 study found 16% of people hospitalised for COVID-19 had gastrointestinal complications more than 100 days after they were discharged. There isn't strong evidence to suggest that the virus replicates in the gut.
