The Six Basic Emotions

There are many different research approaches that can be taken to this, which explains why there are so many different theories out there. I think that the six basic emotions is a good starting point in terms of thinking about what are some of the most core, common, and fundamental emotions that are probably common across most humans. The four big negatively valenced ones, anger, disgust, fear and sadness are pretty universally agreed to be cross-culturally more or less the same. Many people also put surprise in, but not everyone. Another one that's a little bit more controversial is happiness. But anyway, this hopefully illustrates that there's no one accepted list of basic emotions.
