Public health advice was very influenced by the fact that the US was at war. So it was keep morale up. The ways to avoid the flu were to not talk about the flu, drink alcohol and cheer for your country. It wasn't until a few years ago, within the past 10, 15 years, seriously, was it conclusively shown that the 1918 flu was actually an influenza virus.
