Erich's motivation for rebellion was to be the removal of some of his lands in Harrifidshire by a Norman called Richard Fitzgerald. By 1086 190 lay Norman nobles held 54% of English land. The vast majority of English Thanes had been dispossessed of their lands. In April 1068 he felt happy enough to bring his wife Matilda over to join him, and in May she was crowned as his queen in England.
