Greatness by definition is kind of amorphous and from what we know of history like typically polarizing so you kind of have to risk being an outcast. Andrew Wiles the mathematician who proved Fermat's last theorem he worked on that in private for something like 10 years because he didn't want it. He felt he could not tell his colleagues that he was working on one of the great unsolved problems. Some people just kind of know how to climb the ladder and also be great at the same time.
