Command Line Heroes

CHAPTER

The Unimate Robotics Revolution

Inventor of the barcode and automatic door was all about automating away human labor. Deval had been nine years old when the term robot was first coined in a syphi play called rossum's universal robots. He would build a true uni versal robot, which embodied his greatest hit - the unimate. This was a four thousand pound, ten foot by 20 foot bohemi, not humanoid at all. It was mainly composed of one giant arm powered by hydraulics with a magnetic drum memory where commands could be saved. America had a head start in what would become a global race toward robotic automation.
