Arthur wasn't a late Roman figure, but his career actually goes back to the height of Rome during the time of Marcus Aurelius in second century Britain. An article by Kemp Malone wrote two articles in 1924 and 1925 about how this Roman soldier might be the source for King Arthur because there's a lot he wrote on that stone inscription. And basically we've traced the, you know, the life by following this list of the various legions that he was part of. He fights an invasion that comes from north of Hadrian's Wall which is what Geoffrey of Monmouth talks about.
