CHAPTER

The Importance of Syncretism in Lewis' Paralandra

Tolkien is trying to baptize his own imagination in so far as he's just felt sullied by all this horrible death and destruction. So when he is removed from it, it's like he has to purify the dirt of the imagination with the beauty of creation. In Unfairy Stories, he defended the idea of escapism. He says, the only people who worry about escape are jailers, not the escapee. It's like you're escaping pre-OW camp.
