The Self-Torturer's Preferences
The self-torturer's situation seems to be too odd to be worth racking our brains over. Most of us are like him in one way or another, we like to eat, but we also care about our appearance. Just as one more bite will give us pleasure and won't make us look fatter, but very many bites will. So the idea that changes can add up in a way that makes following perfectly rational preferences problematic is really not at all far-fetched, I think.
