The Importance of Rootless Reason in Liberalism
In his reflections on the French revolution, Burke says liberalism naturally re-leads to tyranny and to destruction. He is pointing out what the essential problem with the French revolution is. If you begin with rootless reason, this is what inevitably happens,. I used to say that I was torn politically because Margaret Thatcher believed in economic liberalism and the left believed in social liberalism. And then I suppose as things began to change and the ground shifted and gave way beneath your feet, I became aware that that was foolish and shallow - very understandable.
