There are two theories of the origin of flight. One is that running, and running fast enough, when you start with may be movements that help you manipulate as you run and then finally take off the ground. The other is the arboreal theory, or the trees down, that you start with gliding and control movements of gliding, and then eventually to powered flight. And there's a whole bunch of reasons why, starting with gliding like a flying squirrel, and then controlling your gliding, and using those control movements to create a flight stroke.
