When we tell a child, you're so smart, they feel great about themselves in that moment. But what happens actually is that their confidence actually decreases when things get hard. A study by claudia muller and carol dwack had fifth graders work on a set of puzzles. And the students who had heard they were really smart got anxious. They start they did a lot more poorly in that second set of puzzles than the first set of students. The other thing i would say is that, i working hard is fine, but what's even better is to help kids think about strategies that they use.
