The kamanche wars are very well documented so this is a real life event this was a real life group of filibusters and quite a lot else in this book is real which really happened now the way these kamanche bore down on them in this story they came at them in a cloud of dust and it was a huge herd of horses and ponies that they were driving across the plane. Some riders who would ride not even i can't even call it side saddle they would hang off the edge  of the horse you can watch videos on youtube of people doing this It's also depicted quite well in the buster scrubs movie i think that's what it's called on netflix
