Nigerian Lawyers Often Come Under Political Pressure
While Nigerian law mandates adequate compensation, it often doesn't define adequate in a manner that heavily favors the oil companies. The amount is less than half the value of a single harvest when you take into account expenditures. When ordinary Nigerians do have a case, they still often don't file lawsuits because many of the Nigerian farmers in the rural areas lack the education to realize they have a case or they lack the funds to pursue a case.
