Sphagnum moss is more absorbent than cotton and has slight antibacterial properties. Scientists think that's part of the reason peat bogs accumulate so slowly. The bog was used for retting flax before extracting its fibres to become linen. Sphagnum also acts like a giant sponge - it won't drain, despite being higher than surrounding countryside.
