Being religious in the usually understood sense is not a criterion for being good. The history of vitalism as a moral notion is actually quite checkered. I don't think that life is a very good central concept for an ethic, actually. There are plenty of examples of societies and regimes that have made vitalism into something strongly associated with aggression and power.
