CHAPTER

The Emergence of the Palaces in Crete

The first palaces on Crete were built in or right next to settlements that already existed. The emergence of the palaces marks the beginning of what's traditionally been seen as the golden age of manoen crete. Long distance trade made some people on crete quite wealthy and provided them with the prestigious symbols that made them a recognizable elite in both life and in death. It's not like a single powerful person or dynasty showed up on the island, took over and then built a big house for themselves. Rather, the palaces were the product of competition between the different groups of powerful people that were in the process of emerging from these already existing home communities on crete.
