The O'Reilly Factor quickly became Fox News's first success. In a media landscape in which news usually just came and went, O'Reilly returned to single narratives that functioned much like a soap. The vote recount in the Bush-Gaw election also had the ingredients for a partisan, nightly drama that viewers could return to. From his tabloid empire, Murdoch knew more than anyone that sex and scandal sells more than anything.
