There was a sense that animals like passenger pigeons, like bison, like wolves, jaguars, grizzly bears, these were just too wild to stay in a country that was modeling itself on Europe. England hadn't had wolves since the 1400s. So, hell, we're just going to emulate England and wipe out all those things in North America. They're just too wild for civilization.
