I think if you have no sense of yourself and everything revolves around your children, then they're not going to grow up very well adjusted or with a sense of their own identity. I think this is why edna, in a way, is a better mother than madame ratignele. Her children actually know how to take care of themselves and aren't just winy babies because she doesn't coddle them exactly. In the end she ends up at the critical moment when she actually has the awakening.
