"The right way for Europe to safeguard its way of life and its fundamental political values is to continue to be in a close partnership with the United States," he said. "That hedges against the risk which even as you know a proud dual European-American citizen I'm deeply conscious of." He added that if Donald Trump pulls a rug from Ukraine then there is a very immediate challenge what is Europe actually going to do to defend Ukraine's democracy, independence from Russian imperialism.
