Producer Ed Freeman explained in Yahoo that Don is an excellent, very, very talented singer. He apparently made fun of him because he apparently saying things with the exact same vocal inflections every time. So he decided to be more improvisational when they were recording American Pie. "My estimation was that his improvisations just didn't work and were muddling up the song"
