Baptist forebears wrestled with the scriptures and came to certain conclusions. The most important text that they looked at was in Romans chapter 10. Preacher is not self-annointed, self-appointed, self-commissioned, but rather that there is a doctrine in the Bible of someone being sent. That was the genesis for the development of this office.
