Rowland's Relationship to the Global Events of the Day

Rowland is a kind of alter ego. He lives a sort of life. If I had not found myself as a writer, I was very determined at the beginning of my 20s that I didn't want a job. So I probably would have just hung on in the margins in the way that Rowland does. And my relation to those global events, yes, they are a kind of soundtrack to one's existence,. But most of us are not involved. We don't have any control over these things. Yet they do shape our states of mind, our sense of political pessimism or cultural optimism.
