The original pieces of these specimens were locked away in storage for safe keeping, but casts of them were made to share with researchers who wanted to do further study. A big chunk of the scientific literature surrounding the spine just was credulous and uncritical from the start. But even so, a lot of people studying this find simply took for granted from beginning that it was legitimate.
