Reassurance Is a Complex Intervention
Reassurance is a complex intervention that requires an endeavour on the part of the clinician to be interested in what the person is concerned about. We really don't know until we ask patients what their concerns are and if it isn't cancer then reassuring them about cancer is clearly not person centred. If it isn't that the spine is damaged then again spending time reassuring them about something which they're not concerned about isn't time well spent. It can be done badly by just saying everything's fine it's okay don't worry it's not cancer these are likely to land as invalidating from the perspective of the patient.
