We get imprinted for relationship at an age where we don't have appropriate judgment of the circumstances often our love imprint is an imprint of whatever we got the most and that is not necessarily what love is as an adult nowadays. If you had a hypercritical mother you start to associate her attention which is the criticism with love so to you on some level love is criticism well guess what when you then choose a partner some of that lurks around but some of that perpetuates itself. Even if you say consciously I want a partner who affirms me and gives me praise when they actually give you praise you go you don't mean it.
