Some women socialize not to have their own preferences. Some are inculcated with the fear that they are then dependent on that family's support and favor. Another important way in which this is institutionalized is through the mother-in-law relationship. In poor patrilineal societies where female employment is very low and women lack economic independence mothers prosperity and security is reliant on their sons.
We're in the 21st century, and it would seem that the world is finally moving towards gender equality, right? Not so fast.
