The Printing Press and the Reformation
New ideas could enter the public realm and reach whole new audiences much more quickly than before. Martin luther's attacks on church doctrine were able to cause a stir all over germany and then all over europe, because he simply wrote his arguments out in plain, accessible german vernacular. But we also should remember that the printing press became an instrument of power. Many of the early printers received royal patronage. Caxton received patronage from the crown including richard the third and henry the seventh. And it could be used to propagate the preferred ideas and the new policies and proclamations of the crown.
