The New Space Launch System

The new Space Launch System will eventually carry NASA's Orion crew capsule. The rocket now taking shape in New Orleans will have a central core fitted with internal fuel tanks, four engines and two strap-on solid rockets. Main structure of this giant launcher is made up of curved sections of Aluminium alloy, just a couple of millimetres thick in places,. welded together into barrels using a technique called friction stir welding.
