Is It the Same Saint George?
The story of saint george spread westward from the eastern mediterranean over those following centuries. The earliest reference to a dragon is used, apparently, in a metaphorical sense. It seems to be drawing on some ideas of christ as a dragon's slayer which isn't a big part of his cult. Christianity is very good at adopting and adapting aspects of pre existing traditions.
