The Importance of Chip Specialization for Certain Functions

I think of CPUs the kind of thing that you have in your laptop or your phone as being like the maximally general kind of a compute processing thing. It's not particularly good at any particular kinds of computational operations but it does all of them roughly equally well. You can change the chip design in order to make it like particularly strong at one particular kind of calculation but then it will on the other hand be worse at other kinds of calculations. People started doing this I guess long ago for gaming purposes with these graphics processor units or or GPUs where they figured out that if all you want to do is just render a video game so maybe we should just use GPU and so that gave them a boost
