In 1843, a French company given a monopoly over tobacco by King Louis XIV starts manufacturing the very first close to modern cigarettes. "You can't just light a pipe when you're out in the field because like, you don't just have a thing that's on fire with you at all times," he says. The other thing though is that, again, not easy to get access to stuff to light a pipe or to light a cigar.
