The German Professor and His Temperament
In his first cohort of students, Boas was very much in the mold of the German professor. In World War I, he taught many more women students and they gentled him to a more grand fatherly image. The first cohort of male students called him the old man but his women students called him Papa Franz. He also had a lot of things going on at the American Museum of Natural History, a lot of conflict going on. That allowed him to become more personable and to show more of himself.
