Coffins, Is There a Bell in a Coffin?
A lot of the designs included a bell system. The idea being they'd pulle a little string in the coffin, and it would ring the bell on the surface. Sometimes it wasn't a bell, it was a flag or feathers or some other signal. Some would have pipes running to the surface, which would be open to provide the caskets occupant with fresh air.
