Many of Leonard Cohen's lyrics have implicit or sometimes quite explicit Buddhist stick references. It would be foolish to say that Buddhism is not a religion, he says. But when we cast a more historically critical eye on the tradition, we find that it certainly didn't start out that way. The earlier we go back to the foundational teachings of the Buddha, there's no suggestion at all that he was interested in offering rituals and shrines.
