There has been a debate and a competition in the field of wywe we sleep, visavi memory and forgetting. The story really begins with francis crick from crick and watson fame. He had a very provocative paper whose title was, basically, we sleep in order to smart forget, smart forgetting. And it turns out that he was right. Most of what sleeping does is it clears the slate forgetting. It also allowsse the memories that somehow our brain thinks are important. But all the stuff that's not is effectively manicured down.
