In november 19 56, an english instructor named charles van doran comes on the show as a contestant to challenge the in champ, herbert stemple. After a series of dramatic ties, van doren finally beats stemple and goes on to win more than a hundred thousand dollars. He's a real public darling. But then van doren retracts.
